DNF: about halfway when I decided to stop reading.

I like how the story was going but it bores me because of the choice of words (duh, vanessa. Duh). I wish I could have finished it but I just couldn't!

Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

He would kiss me, right now, after everything I’d done. I was poison, and Noah was the drug that would make me forget it.

BOOM. My heart went BOOM!

Months ago, I was able to find and read the first chapter from the internet. After that, I knew I needed to read the book. So I did. It wasn’t a hard read at all – The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer drowned me with its words, and I didn’t know I was halfway already. It was an exciting read. Spooky, as I was never a fan of dead person. Or dead persons. Reading the book without having the other volumes? I must say it’s a bad idea.

After reading The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, I’m not entirely sure how to fix my feels. It was a really, really good read. Interestingly scary. The more I flipped through pages, the more things got heated. Whatever was happening to Mara was scary, honestly. Who likes a ghost staring back at you when you look at the mirror? If I were in Mara’s situation, I might’ve lost my mind more than I already had. When Mara met Noah Shaw and knew the secret he had, I just wanted to go on reading the story. To know what had happened and what will happen.

I have a love-hate relationship in an insta-love situation. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it to the point that I just want to throw the book. But, in The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, I ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY, SERIOUSLY LOVED IT. I want my own Noah Shaw. I’d probably love him from the day I’ll lay my eyes on him. Seriously. With the British accent? He’ll probably even melt me.

Overall, it was an amazing book. It was easy to devour, and Michelle Hodkin wrote the book perfectly (not to mention using the word perfect too many times). Creepy, yes, but the kind of creepy that sets my hype! I am definitely looking forward to reading the next books. The last page totally stunned me. I can’t help but want to read the next ones.

Review: Champion

Champion Champion by Marie Lu
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I can’t quite explain what I felt right after I read the book. I had a mixed emotions, but I would not hide the fact that I cried a lot. Damn it.

I started reading Champion after reading Prodigy because seriously, who could get a good night’s sleep right after that ending? I was quite happy when I got my nose buried in the book – but I was only a few pages from the first one when I already had tears on my eye. The more I dived deeper in the book, the more intense it got. I had to hold my tears back, especially during those last few pages, as I was afraid someone might see me and think I’m crazy.

The story started eight months later where Prodigy left us. Funny how June and Day were separated from each other longer than they knew one another. To be honest, the book made me hate Anden. I had a lot of reasons to hate him – especially when I ship June and Day! Obviously, he liked, or loved, June Iparis. And… he was asking June a favor, a favor which I hated, up until now! I thought of it as selfish. Maybe not, as it was for the good of the Republic – but what good did the Republic did to Day? That was what got me.

I had a traumatic experience once, reading a book where the character meets his (or rather, her) dead mother in an almost dying situation. (I’m talking about Allegiant, y’all). It broke my heart into a million pieces. I hoped I had my heart prepared that I would be reading yet another book like that again. I now have my heart broken into 1.5 million pieces. Sometimes I wish it could be converted into money. Lol!

I would be lying if I said I liked it, because I loved it. It was insanely amazing. I cried a lot, yes, but it was worth the tears. But I can’t believe I spent 1, 197pesos all for that ending. Oh my gods, you have no idea what the ending did to me. It drove me crazy. I was crying, and just thinking about it makes me tear a little bit. I can’t believe that that’s it.

Overall, I loved Champion. I never really thought I would love it because: the first two books were an okay read – not the best ones I have read but I still liked it; and, the ending was the bomb. The cover was a plus factor, it was cute. Among the books, this was my favorite cover. Okay, you should read this but when you’re a sucker for happy endings, then brace yourself!

Review: Prodigy

Prodigy Prodigy by Marie Lu
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Oh. My. God.

I spent hours and hours of reading, I’ve lost count on how many times I had to roll my eyes, and I had to stop myself from screaming a lot of times for the book to end like that. Oh my gods.

It’s been 5 months, I guess, since I read the first book, Legend. I had a rough time starting Prodigy because my mind is quite confused, but once I was on track, it was an easy read. It was fast-paced. Everything happened so quickly, even Day falling in love with June happened real quickly.

Prodigy set me off in an adventure I may not experience. The book was still divided into 2 different point of views – June’s and Day’s. After quite few pages, I was almost convinced I disliked June. Almost. It was hard to pinpoint where her loyalty really lies. It annoyed me a lot. When she was arrested by the Republic and had talks with the Elector, I almost threw the book. She seriously annoyed me. Yeah, I get that she’s smart and all – she wouldn’t be the Republic’s treasured Prodigy for nothing. Day, on the other hand, made me like him even more in this book. He knew where he stands, and it was June’s fault why that happened, why it failed. However, after that little twist, I’m starting to understand June.

What I liked about the book was that they were able to describe stuff clearly, most especially June who was so specific in describing time, and even how the place where they were looked. I was also able to reflect on some injustice – when Day was arrested, he was tortured; when June was arrested, she was not treated like a prisoner. I know Day shrugged this thought because that’s June, but this seriously showed injustice not only in the book but as well as that in real life.

Overall, I liked Prodigy! I seriously think that this is better than the first book. However, the ending nearly broke my heart! I spent hours and hours reading a 371-pages book and get an ending like that? Thankfully, I got myself a copy of Champion already!

Review: The Blood of Olympus

The Blood of Olympus The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This review was originally posted on Nessa's World

“Seven half-bloods shall answer the call,

To storm or fire the world must fall.

An oath to keep with final breath,

And foes bear arms to the Doors of Death.”

Oh my gods. I just finished the best book I have read. Yet. I had a mixed emotion after reading the book: sad, happy, frustrated, in love. But I must say, this book is an absolute perfection. I love it so, so much. A literal unputdownable book. The character developments are so recognizable, and I loved it! Reading the book made me cry a river, but it wasn’t a waste of tears.

When I saw its Table of Contents, there goes Nico’s name. I was like, Oh great! A POV from Nico. I would definitely love it. And guess what? I did. I almost wished that every chapter should’ve been Nico’s POV. Almost. But the book was divided into different point of views, different scenarios, which made it a really great one. The adventures, their battles, sweet talks. Almost everything went well in the book.

I enjoyed the book. A lot! It’s perfectly written and the words are wonderfully picked – the demigods faced so many monstrous creatures and near-death scenarios – and I don’t recall anyone saying fuck or shit or something like that. However, it’s just hard to know all the gods and other creatures in the book because there’s too many of them and I could not even pronounce their names correctly.

The Blood of Olympus is not only filled with actions, as well as romance. It went perfectly well in the story. Jason and Piper, my least favorite couple, were better than the books before but they’re still my least favorite. Apart from that, the book is also funny, witty. It had me laughing for like a minute or so. Oh, wait. Those lines still got me right now.

Here are some of those:

(view spoiler)

I cried a lot while I was reading. And then, the last chapter happened! Oh gods, I felt my heart beating so, so fast. I did not see that coming! Oh gods. After reading, I was singing Best Song Ever by One Direction but changed the lyrics: And I cried all night but it’s the best book ever!, because it literally is.

Obviously I loved the book. Rick Riordan is a genius. Any argument is invalid. Why I read the series just this year? Oh I don’t know. But no regrets. I love it so much. 10 over 5 stars because it is absolutely, definitely, totally perfect. Err, I’m having the book hangover…

Review: The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak

The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak The Improbable Theory of Ana and Zak by Brian Katcher
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This review was originally posted on Nessa's World.

So... The Improbable Theory of Zak and Ana is neither a bad book nor a good one. I was dreading for something unusual but... nah. I didn't get what I wanted.

It's a short book but took me about a day to read it. The instalove didn't help. That quick? Hmm... I'm not quite convinced. Liking the person you'd least expect you would.

Ana is a typical smart teenager: good grades, strict parents, and the need for an almost perfect life. Zak, on the other hand, is the total opposite. He is the comic book geek whose idea of fun is going yearly to an event called Washingcon. Hmm. So, they begin series of misadventures. Huh, I think I've read or watched this somewhere.

When Zak and Ana were looking for Clayton, Ana's brother, things didn't go quite well. Everything goes down to Clayton. But why didn't Ana stop him or at least tried screaming to him while he was getting on a cab. Nah. Gods, is it that hard? And the fact that Clayton's just watching them? Oh gods. I was totally annoyed.

I didn't get hooked up with the book, but I know I had to finish this. I was looking for something extraordinary but I didn't see it! So... Clayton had to wander around the Washingcon so that Zak will like his stepfather and that Ana will learn to answer his mother and fight for herself? Huh. Gods.

Overall I did not like the book. But I think I liked the part about Ana's life, although things seem to be exaggerated. Once again, this book isn't for me.

Review: The House of Hades

The House of Hades The House of Hades by Rick Riordan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This review was originally posted on Nessa's World.

"Bob says hello".

OH MY GODS. I so freaking love this book. This is the best book of the series yet! It was an easy and enjoyable read. I love everything in the book: the way it was written, the characters, the plot, and most especially the character developments.

Jason and Piper is still my least favorite pair in the series. But I kinda like how these two improved in the book, most especially Piper who used to be the beauty queen in the first book. I'm also glad that Frank finally trusted Leo. It's hard to be on a big, big ship with people you can't trust. Leo, of all, had changed a lot! After being stranded in an island with a girl, he has changed quite a lot. Wow, although I hope we still get the old witty Leo. Nico, oh Nico. That big secret of his, it made me love him even more. Leo might have changed a lot but still, Nico is the one who changed the most from his first appearance in The Titan's Curse to this book.

Percy and Annabeth... oh gods, these two. They're brave and smart and obviously in love with each other. Getting plunged into Tartarus alone was bad enough, but having each other probably made it a little bit lighter.

The book still alternates from different perspectives, taking us into a trip to Tartarus and as well as the world above. Unsurprisingly, I love the book and am dying to read more. Rick Riordan wrote the book very well. The House of Hades is a very compelling book, drawing the reader in from the first page to the last.

Review: All the Bright Places

All the Bright Places All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

This review was originally posted on Nessa's World

What did I just read? A book that made me feel depressed because it reminded me of the life I had.

I did not like the book. I really did not like it. It was hard to go on reading, I put it down couple of times because it wasn't what I thought it would be. The first parts of the book left me confused. I don't understand what happened at the bell tower and why it was such a big deal. I almost decided not to finish this but then again, I must continue what I started.

All The Bright Places talks about death and ends with death. It tries to put the readers into a sad mood. When the part where it happened, I was just, Oh. So this is where I'm supposed to cry. The book is so easy to put down but is getting harder and harder to pick up and continue reading. It left me confused as hell, and I may or may not reread it. Maybe not. Definitely not.

The characters aren't the type I fell for. Theodore Finch looked forward to the day of his death which isn't exactly what I want as a book boyfriend. He also talked in a very confusing manner (or so I thought). It's kind of hard to understand. Violet Markey is looking forward to the day of her graduation, freedom, or liberation but still lives in the past. She uses her sister's death as an excuse to stay away from the world, but then again The Amazing Finch comes and she's slowly going out of the shell she covered herself with. Hmm...

A few hours after reading the book, I felt so depressed, sad... not because of what happened in the book but because some of the lines reminded me what and how I was before. I shouldn't have read the book. It put me into a situation I tried avoiding for awhile. I have no trouble about books about death and dead people but this just did not work for me. It isn't for me.

A new favorite!!!!!

I loved this book so much from the first page to the last. I found it hard to stop reading because things got more intense from one chapter to the other. It literally took my breathe away and I was just stomping because I had no other idea how to release my feelings. This book is perfect. I had a sweet dream about Percy and Annabeth so I'm guessing I did so much reading.

Thing I loved the most? PERCABETH. FINALLY! Oh my gosh, finally! They finally reunited. Ugh, I super love these 2! It wasn't hard to keep up with the story especially during the Percabeth scenes. I also enjoyed scenes with the other demigods (especially you, Leo. I really like you), but I'm starting to dislike Piper. I hate how she's acting... just because she's a daughter of Aphrodite? Hmm. But I'm giving the girl a chance since she saved Jason and Percy. And there's still two books!!!

The book is totally compelling. Rick Riordan might have inherited Aphrodite's charmspeak and secretly put a "continue reading" between the lines. There's some twists in the story, specifically Hazel and Leo's history. I was wondering how it affected them but I seemed to haven't noticed it in the book. I think the book is filled with much more romance than The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune but it doesn't really bother me because it does not make the story less interesting.

I don't know why I loved how it ended. I SHOULDN'T but I did. In the last few chapters, things were happening so fast I was having a hard time breathing. As usual, it ended cliffy which leads me to the next book, The House of Hades.

Overall, I love the book. I really don't know how to unlove it. Everything is awesome! Their adventures were dangerous but seriously? I LOVED IT. I entered into a world I've never been to, met creatures I didn't even know, fought (in my imagination) with seven demigods. FANTASTIC!

HOLY MOTHER OF SHEEPS. I am totally annoyed with how this book ended. Seriously, the authors are so cruel to leave me hanging... again! But, tbh, I liked it better than the part one.

Charlie and Silas both have no memories. Part two started a few hours later where part one left us. I like how things were going. Although still clueless, at least Silas managed to go over the notes he saw and Charlie's journals to have the slightest clue what on earth is happening.

Things were happening so fast, considering the fact that Silas got only 48 hours to figure out where's Charlie before they both forget who they are once again. Charlie's situation didn't make things better. And considering that she hadn't the slightest clue about what happened and who she is, there is definitely no way she could answer my whys.

The last parts though... I freaked out!!! Charlie and Silas were ready. I was ready. They're only a minute away from not remembering anything. Then boom!!!!!

I don't really think I have that much to say. Just give me the third part right now! Cruel, cruel authors. Leaving the readers with to be continued... for the second time. Please know that it hurts.

Review: The Son of Neptune

The Son of Neptune The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This review was originally posted on Nessa's World.

One word: cool. Really, cool. I finally got to meet Hazel and Frank, reunited with Percy, and well, learned some stuff about the Roman camp they call as Camp Jupiter.

Jason was right. Percy lost his memories just as Jason did and was sent to Camp Jupiter thanks to Hera/Juno whatever. The only thing that I thanked Hera for was that she left Annabeth's memory so Percy still knows who she is.

Well, in this book, I was introduced to Camp Jupiter. Learned some of the stuff they do inside their camp. I still prefer Camp Half-Blood though, except that in Camp Jupiter, you get to live longer and have a family of your own.

And Percy's thought though...

(view spoiler)

I'm still amazed and totally loving how things were going. Not to mention Nico di Angelo's gotten hotter. But seriously, being a son of Hades and all, he's so sexy and mysterious. I can't believe he's the same person that collected those Greek miniatures.

The adventures and near death experiences are totally cool. And who would've thought Ares or Mars will be quite funny? Because really, I was laughing when he was looking for a ballpen.

Sadly, the book still left me hanging. Percabeth reunion feels so near... really near but Rick Riordan ended it without Percy seeing his Greek demigod friends.

The Son of Neptune does not just set us in an adventure but at the same time, teaches us lessons like loyalty, bravery and all. I love how Rick Riordan wrote this book. Not one dull moment!! I just totally did not like how it ended. Guess I just had to read the next book...

Review: The Lost Hero

The Lost Hero The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wow, yet another series from Rick Riordan (although yeah I know I'm very late)! But this time, I got to meet new characters, new demigods: Jason, Piper, and Leo. Jason, the one who woke up having no memories who he is. Piper, the beauty queen. Leo, the flaming Valdez. The three were sent to a quest to save the goddess Hera.

What did I like? Everything. YES! But what I liked, or loved the most is when everybody's addressing Percy as Annabeth's boyfriend.

(view spoiler)

OH DON'T YOU JUST LOVE PERCABETH but I gotta stop talking about them here. Really.

Anyways, I kinda miss those titles of the chapters in the PJO series. In The Lost Hero, the chapter number is being followed by the character's name. But I still love how Rick Riordan wrote the book. Things got more intense as I move on from one chapter to another.

I also loved how finally someone asked about everybody being cousins in here or how is it possible that gods and godesses had so many children whose age is very close to each other. FINALLY! At least I'm no longer that puzzled because really though, how is that possible?

Funny how when you're a demigod on a quest, you always get to meet monsters or gods or some creatures on your way. Who could you trust?!?!?! Seriously. And that little twist about the Roman camp though, wow. So that's why Jason calls every gods and goddesses in their Roman names. Ohh. It was pretty surprising and made the story more interesting.

The ending. THE ENDING! Why are the books I've been reading recently ends in a "it shouldn't have ended like that" way? But I'm not including this book to those whose ending annoyed me. It just made me want to read more! I'm not even a fan of Greek Mythology (let's include Roman, now) but I am totally loving it. Looking forward to reading the next books!!!

Review: Never Never

Never Never Never Never by Colleen Hoover
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This review was originally posted on Nessa's World

What the hell did I just read? Why did it have to end like that?

Tbh, I have no problem with books that ends with cliffhangers --- not until I read this one. I was just enjoying the last parts because finally, I'm getting what's happened! And then there's this to be continued... which totally wrecked me. How am I supposed to have a good night's sleep when I want to know more, read more?

Although confusing, I liked its mystery thingy because it made the book (is it really a book, though) bit more interesting. When I picked up the book to start reading it, I thought I would love it but probably not. The main characters had no idea who they are, what they looked like, but could remember some insignificant things that does not help them in knowing who they are (like how a jellyfish looks like or the song lyrics).

It's quite disturbing that they were cheating but when one knew the other is cheating, I didn't feel any of their emotion (I'm guessing though that there weren't that much emotion since they're oblivious about stuff). So, I totally disliked these parts.

Overall, I could not say that it's a good or bad book. I didn't like it though, but there's 2 books coming up so sign me up! I'm so curious to know what's with the letters and what'll happen to Charlie and Silas.

I hope that when I read the next book, it wouldn't leave me the way this one did. It just seems to me that this is an advertisement for the next one.
